Avoid omitting of after in spite.

Correct:

Despite the light rain, the baseball game was not canceled.

EXAMPLE 2:

Incorrect:

In spite the light rain, the baseball game was not canceled.

Correct:

In spite of the light rain, the baseball game was not canceled.
