SIMPLE PAST: Completed events at a definite time in the past

PASADO SIMPLE: Acontecimientos finalizados en un determinado momento del pasado

Did you eat snails at the
restaurant last night?
No, I didn't.

¿Comiste caracoles en el 
restaurante anoche?
No (no lo hice).

Did you go out for dinner
on Saturday?
Yes, I did.

¿Saliste a cenar 
el sábado?
Sí (lo hice).

I went to a Korean restaurant
last week.

Fui a un restaurante coreano
la semana pasada.

PRESENT PERFECT: Events within a time period up to the present

PRESENTE PERFECTO: Acontecimientos durante un período de tiempo hasta el presente

Have you ever eaten snails?
No, I haven't.

¿Has comido alguna vez caracoles?
No (no lo he hecho).

Have you been to a French restaurant?
Yes, I have.

¿Has ido alguna vez a un
 restaurante francés?
Sí (lo he hecho).

I've never been to a Greek restaurant.

No he ido jamás a un
restaurante griego.

CARACTERÍSTICAS A TENER EN CUENTA PARA ESTOS TIEMPOS VERBALES  ...

Con una acción finalizada en el pasado (yesterday; last week; in 1988; six months ago) sólo se puede utilizar el Pasado Simple. No debe utilizarse el Presente Perfecto ya que éste implica que la acción iniciada en el pasado continúa vigente en el presente. Aquí tienes algunos ejemplos:

I saw Jack yesterday (incorrecto:  I have seen Jack yesterday ); 
Where were you last night? (incorrecto:  Where have you been last night?); 
We didn't take a vacation last year (incorrecto:  We haven't taken a vacation last year ); 
When did they arrive? (incorrecto:  When have they arrived?). 

Observa ahora estas comparaciones entre ambos tiempos verbales:

I have lost my key
o  I lost my key

pero

I lost my key yesterday
(no  I have lost my key yesterday)

Have you ever been to Italy?

pero

Did you go to Italy last year?
