Glossary & Grammar

It's quarter to three
There's no one in the place
Except you and me
So, set 'em up, Joe
I've got a little story
I think you should know
We're drinkin', my friend
To the end of a brief episode
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road

I've got the routine
Put another nickel
In the machine
Feelin' so bad
Can't you make the music
Easy and sad
I could tell you a lot
But you've got to be
True to your code
Just make it one for my baby
And one more for the road

You'd never know it but buddy
I'm a kind of poet
And I got a lot of things
I'd like to say
And when I'm gloomy
Won't you listen to me
Till it's talked away

Well that's how it goes and Joe
I know you're gettin'
Anxious to close
And thanks for the cheer
I hope you didn't mind
My bendin' your ear
But this torch that I found
It's gotta be drowned
Or it soon might explode
So, make it one for my baby
And one more for the road

The long, it's so long
The long, the long...

Son las tres menos cuarto
No queda nadie aquí
Excepto tú y yo.
Entonces sírveme Joe
Tengo una pequeña historia
Creo que deberías conocerla.
Estamos bebiendo, amigo
Por el final de un corto romance.
Sírveme uno (un trago) por mi nena
Y otro más para el viaje ...

Conozco la rutina,
Así que pon otra moneda
En la máquina.
Me siento tan mal,
Puedes poner música
Sencilla y triste.
Te podría contar tantas cosas
Pero tienes que
Ajustarte a tus principios
Así que sírveme uno por mi nena
Y otro más para el viaje ...

Nunca lo supiste pero compañero,
Soy algo así como un poeta.
Y tengo muchas cosas
Que quisiera contar
Y cuando estoy melancólico,
Ten a bien escucharme
Hasta que lo haya largado.

Bien así son las cosas y Joe,
Sé que estás
Apurado por cerrar.
Así que gracias por el trago,
Espero que no te haya molestado
Que te cuente mis problemas.
Pero este fuego sentimental que tengo
Tiene que ser apagado
O pronto habrá de estallar.
Así que, sírveme uno por mi nena
Y otro más para el viaje ...

El largo, es tan largo
El largo, el largo...

SOME COMMENTS:

"Set'em up, Joe" = Serve me a drink, Joe. Set them (drinks) up on the bar.
episode = here means "a love affair,"  "a romantic interlude."

"I've got the routine" =  "I've got (it)" I understand. I comprehend. "the routine" from show business slang, "dance routine," a dance choreographed to fit a particular song. Singer is saying he knows what people are supposed to do ("the routine") when a love affair is over: You go to a bar, you play sad songs on the jukebox and you drink too much.

"your code" = gentlemen don't "kiss and tell" -- don't reveal intimate details of their love affairs to others out of deference to the lady and her reputation.

"Thanks for the cheer"  = Thanks for trying to cheer me up. (Visitor William Halpin "Bill" has suggested us that "Thanks for the cheer means "Thanks for the drink", in this lyrics).
"Hope you didn't mind me bending your ear" = hope you didn't mind me telling you my problems, talking so much about my problems.

"This torch that I found" = Refers to "carrying a torch." When you love someone very much but they don't love you any more or never loved you, you are "carrying a torch" for that person.  Singer is "carrying a torch" for the woman in the "brief episode" -- she broke up with him but he still loves her. That's why he's in the bar drinking.  He's depressed over the breakup. "Torch songs" are songs about "carrying a torch" for someone, sad songs about unrequited love.  This song would qualify as a "torch song."
"Gotta be drowned" = refers to "drowning your sorrows" in alcohol = drinking to forget something unpleasant that you don't want to deal with or is too painful to think about.
