New census figures confirm both the shrinkage of many urban
areas and the
revival of small towns, a trend that began to become apparent in the last
decade. While the national population increased by 4.8 percent from 1970-1975,
towns of 2,500-25,000 persons rose 7.5 percent, and the smallest towns with populations of less than 2,500 rose 8.7 percent, or nearly double the national
rate. |
