All about FCE

PRACTICAL MATTERS

OK!! Here we are at last and this is my opportunity to give you my final advice on taking the FCE exam ...

1

ANSWER SHEETS

PAPERS 1 AND 3

You will have a question paper and a separate answer sheet on which you record your answers. Read carefully the instructions to see how to fill in the answer sheet.

PAPER 4

You will have a question paper and a separate answer sheet. Write your answers on the question paper while you listen to the tape. At the end of the exam you will be given time to copy your answers on to the separate answer sheet.

2

MATERIALS TO TAKE TO THE EXAM

DON'T FORGET TO TAKE WITH YOU:

A pencil, a rubber, a pencil sharpener, a pen and a watch.

3

INSTRUCTIONS

Follow all instructions carefully.

4

TIMING

Allow yourself enough time to do each question. Do not leave any questions unfinished at the end of the exam. Keep an eye on your watch, and leave yourself time for checking.

5

RELAX

FEEL RELAXED

Even though it is difficult, try and approach your FCE exam feeling relaxed.

And now look at what some students said about preparing the First Certificate Exam !!

'I enjoy finding words with the same root - 'beauty', 'beautiful', 'beautifully', 'beautify'. It's like getting four words for the price of one! So, I think the word formation task is fun'.

'Reading comprehension questions are fun, especially the kind where you have to fit in missing parts of the text. It's like a jigsaw puzzle with words'.

'The set book I'm reading is really exciting. But I don't know whether I'll write about it in the exam. I'll probably decide when I see the question paper'.

'I feel really nervous when I think about the listening test. If I miss the answer to the first question, my brain stops working and I don't understand anything. What can I do?'

'I'm looking forward to Parts 3 and 4 of Paper 5 in the exam. I enjoy solving problems and it really makes you communicate with your partner, and share your ideas'.

'I used to find the error correction exercise very difficult. I couldn't find the mistakes - I took out words which were correct and left in words which were wrong!! Good timing was a problem to me. But now I've had some practice at it I know what kind of mistakes to look for, and I can do the exercise quite well'.
