GAP-FILLING:
MULTIPLE CHOICE |
Part 1 of the Use of English paper is a
multiple-choice gap-filling exercise which tests your knowledge of
vocabulary. You are given a text with 15 gaps in it, and you have
to decide which of four words or phrases best fills each gap.
Follow these steps to help you do this well. |
1. READING A TEXT |
Always read through the whole text first to get
a general idea of the topic. |
Now, quickly read through the text in the
practice exercise below (taken from
Unit 1, Lesson 4 of this course) and decide which of
these titles best sums up what it is about: |
a) HOW TO WRITE A HISTORY BOOK
b) WOMEN IN HISTORY
► correct
c) FAMOUS HISTORICAL FIGURES |
2. WHAT IS TESTED |
These four different aspects of your knowledge
of vocabulary are tested: |
1 |
WORDS WHICH USUALLY GO TOGETHER
For example, look at [1]
in the practice text below. Only one of the nouns (attention,
care,
notice,
study) goes with the verb
pay. Which one? |
2 |
DIFFERENCES IN MEANING BETWEEN
SIMILAR WORDS
For example, look at [6].
Which of these words with a similar meaning (evidence,
fact,
proof,
sign) is the only
possible one in this sentence? |
3 |
PHRASAL VERBS
Now, look at [11].
Which of these phrasal verbs with "up" (count
up, hold up,
make up,
take up) has the
appropriate meaning? |
4 |
PREPOSITIONS OR STRUCTURES
Look, for example,, at [13].
Which of these nouns (mention,
note,
record,
reference) is followed by
"to"? And in [14],
which of these verbs (deny,
forbid,
oppose,
refuse) is followed by a
"that" clause? |
|
A PRACTICE EXERCISE |
WOMEN IN HISTORY
Some historians, mostly women, argue that insufficient
[1] (attention,
care, notice, study) has been paid to a very important
group: women.
According to the history books, cavemen provided most of the food
for their families through hunting animals. But the
[6] (evidence,
fact, proof, sign) shows that 80% of the diet of
prehistoric humans was vegetarian and it was collected by females.
Women [11] (count
up, hold up, make up, take up) half the human race. If
there is no [13]
(mention, note, record, reference) to
their contribution to history in the textbooks, then the real
story is not being told.
However many male historians [14]
(deny, forbid, oppose, refuse) that
important female figures have been kept out of the history books. |
FINAL ADVICE |
As you decide how to fill each gap, think about: |
► |
the general idea of the whole text. |
► |
the meaning of the word you are choosing. |
► |
how the word you are choosing fits in that
particular sentence. |
► |
the other words or grammatical structures
which go with that word in the sentence. |
