This paper tests your understanding of spoken English. There are four
parts, each with a different listening task and text(s). |
The texts and
instructions are recorded on cassette. You are tested on your
understanding of the main idea, of points of detail, and of opinion
and attitude. |
PAPER
5 - SPEAKING (approx. 14 mins) > 40 marks |
Your speaking is tested by two examiners, one who talks with you and
one who just listens. |
The standard format of the Speaking component
is two candidates and two examiners. This component consists of four
parts. In part one the candidates talk to the examiner and each other
about themselves, their home, family, school or work, plans for the
future, etc. In part two each candidate talks about a set of photographs.
In part three the candidates do a task together and in part four the
candidates discuss a topic with the examiner. |
Your speaking is
marked on your success in carrying out the instructions, as well as
your fluency, communicative ability, pronunciation, accuracy and range
of grammar and vocabulary. |

PRACTICAL MATTERS |
a) ANSWER SHEETS: Papers 1 and 3: You will have a question paper and
a separate answer sheet on which you record your answers; Paper 4: You
will have a question paper and a separate answer sheet. Write your
answers on the question paper while you listen to the tape. At the end
of the exam you will be given time to copy your answers on to the
separate answer sheet. |
b) MATERIALS TO TAKE TO THE EXAM: Pencil, rubber, pencil
sharpener, pen, watch. |
c) INSTRUCTIONS: Follow all instructions carefully. |
d) TIMING: Allow yourself enough time to do each question.
Do not leave any questions unfinished at the end of the exam. Keep an eye
on your watch, and leave yourself time for checking. |
e) RELAX: Even though it is difficult, try and approach the
exam feeling confident and relaxed. |

In the First Certificate Examination there are three
PASSING GRADES (A, B or C) and two FAILING GRADES (D or
E). |
