Dear Miss Hints,

I invited my friend to stay with me when she had to leave her apartment. I only meant for her to stay a week or two until she found another apartment. But she has been staying at home for three months now. I find it very difficult to say anything. When I say something to her she promises to find an apartment. But she can never find anything she likes.

Last month, my uncle died unexpectedly. He lived on his own far away and I did not keep in touch as much as I wanted to. When I was looking through his papers I found several letters he had written. They said bad things about my family. He obviously meant these letters to be found after he was dead. I have not said a word to anyone but this has made me very upset.

My son is 26 years old now. He finished college three years ago, but he can't seem to find a job that he likes, and he answers few ads. He still lives at home, and I am really worried that he is not trying hard enough to get a job and live on his own. Meanwhile, I have been cooking his meals, doing his laundry, tidying up his room, and so on. I am really tired.

With a great effort during the past five years I was saving dollar after dollar. Fortunately, I could buy a second-hand car two years ago. Now that I have a car all my friends keep asking me to drive them everywhere. They do not pay me anything. My friends seem the real owners and they ask me to drive them wherever they want to go.
What should I do?

You are making it too easy for him to stay in his present position. Be firm and tell him he has two months to find a job (any job will be good for his situation) and get his own place. And explain to him that he is old enough to take care of himself. But you have to be willing to let him go.

Tell your friends that you feel unhappy when they do this, and ask them to help you to pay for gasoline. It is good to help your friends, but it can feel bad when they do not appreciate you. Sometimes you may be happy to drive your friends, but sometimes you may not.

Your friend pretends to find an apartment when you complain and knows you find it difficult to say anything to her. The rest of the time she is very comfortable and does not bother. You must confront her, explain your feelings, and agree with her when she will leave.

You have done the right thing by keeping quiet about the letters. Telling others can create more unhappiness. Let them remember him kindly, even if you feel he does not really deserve this. If you find it is making you really unhappy, a good counselor can help you deal with your feelings.
