BIG BEN
Sir Benjamin Hall built this famous clock tower in London
in 1859. A well-known story relates that it got its name 
from this man's considerable proportions. 

BRASILIA
In the late 1950s, 
Lucio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer designed and built this very modern city to be 
the new Brazilian capital. 

COLOSSEUM
The Colosseum in Rome
was opened in 80 A.D.
It was sometimes filled
with water for ship battles.

EIFFEL TOWER
This famous tower in Paris
was completed in 1889.
It was built to celebrate
the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution.

GREAT WALL
The Great Wall of China
was begun in 214 B.C. 
and it is the largest structure
ever built.

STATUE OF LIBERTY
This remarkable statue 
in New York was opened
in 1886 and it was a gift 
to the Americans 
from the people of France.

MACHU PICCHU
The Lost City of the Incas
was rediscovered in 1911
when American explorer
Hiram Bingham led a small expedition into the
Peruvian Andes.

PYRAMIDS
The ancient Egyptians
were the builders
of these famous monuments
in about 2500 B.C.

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE
In 1973, young Danish designer
Jorn Utzon proposed this widely known building in Australia 
for an architecture competition
and he was the winner.

TAJ MAHAL
This beautiful monument
in India was built between 
1630 and 1652. It is a tomb 
for the wife of an Indian prince.
