The Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm
Grimm, were German academics, philologists, cultural researchers,
lexicographers and authors who together collected and published folklore
during the 19th century. They were among the best-known collectors of
folk tales and popularized traditional oral tales. The brothers spent
their formative years in the German town of Hanau. Their father's death
in 1796 impoverished the family and affected the brothers for many years
after. They attended the University of Marburg where they developed a
curiosity about German folklore, which grew into a lifelong dedication
to collecting German folk tales. Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm was born in
1785 and died in 1863. His brother Wilhelm Carl Grimm was born in 1786
died in 1859. |

THE BROTHERS GRIMM'S FAIRY TALES
The first volume of the first edition was published in 1812, containing
86 stories; the second volume of 70 stories followed in 1815. For the
second edition, two volumes were issued in 1819 and a third in 1822,
totalling 170 tales. The first volumes were much criticized because,
although they were called "Children's Tales", they were not regarded as
suitable for children, both for the scholarly information included and
the subject matter. Many changes through the editions were probably made
with an eye to such suitability. They removed sexual references but, in
many respects, violence, particularly when punishing villains, was
increased. |
