Simple Past and Past Progressive

 

EXERCISE A

Put the verbs in brackets into the simple past or the past progressive.

 

1.  Tommy's mother often (tell) him that he (spend) too much money on running shoes but he never (listen).

2.  As Mr. Wells (cross) the street he (step) on a banana skin and (fall) heavily.

3.  The policeman (clean) his gun when it accidentally (go) off and (kill) him.

4.  The thief (open) the safe when he (hear) someone coming, so he immediately (crawl) under the bed.

5.  The president (play) chess when he (receive) the news of the war, but he (insist) on finishing the game.

 
 

EXERCISE B

Put the verbs in brackets into the simple past or the past progressive.

 

1.  At 4 am Sandra (wake) her boyfriend and (say) that someone (try) to get into the apartment.

2.  Helen (find) a gold ring as she (dig) in the garden. It looked very old and she wondered who it (belong) to.

3.  The prisoner (escape) by climbing the wall of the garden where he (work). He (wear) a yellow T-shirt.

4.  The accountant just (write) a cheque when he (remember) that he (have) no money in the bank.

5.  As we (drive) here a policeman (stop) us. He (say) that he (look) for some stolen property.
