Confusing words

 

 

This section of our course will review 100 words groups that are troublesome to many CPE students. Words have been grouped according to the way they are most often confused or misused. Some of these words are homonyms (words that sound alike but are spelled differently) and some are just commonly confused. Each set of confusables (eg: their, there, they're) are displayed together.

Words Groups - Part 10/10

temerity = boldness
timidity = shyness

92.

their = belonging to them
there = in that place
they're = they are

93.

troop = a group of people
troupe = a company of singers, dancers, or actors

94.

urban = pertaining to the city
urbane = polished; suave

95.

waiver = the giving up of a claim
waver = to hesitate

96.

waist = part of the body
waste = needless destruction; useless consumption; to expend uselessly

97.

weigh = to measure the weight of
way = road
whey = a part of milk that is separated from the curds in cheese making

98.

weather = atmospheric conditions
whether = if

99.

wholesome = healthful
fulsome = disgusting and excessive

100.

your = belonging to you
you're = contraction of you are
