Expressing yourself

 

 

 

Although there are many different cultures, emotions and feelings are the same for all human beings. They feel the same sensations for joy, fear, sadness or love but express them using different words and adjectives.

1. EXPRESSING EMOTIONS AND FEELINGS

a. These adjectives describe NEGATIVE emotions or feelings:

angry

disappointed

humiliated

annoyed disconcerted impatient
anxious discontented indignant
apprehensive disillusioned infuriated
baffled embarrassed irritated
bored exasperated low
browned off fed up mystified
concerned frightened puzzled
confused furious terrified

depressed

horrified

worried

b. These adjectives describe POSITIVE emotions or feelings:

amazed

excited

pleased

astonished fascinated satisfied
astounded glad staggered
curious happy stunned
delighted interested surprised

enthralled

intrigued

thrilled

2. EXPRESSING MOODS AND ATTITUDES

While we are speaking, we usually express certain moods, feelings and attitudes, and in the CPE exam (listening comprehension test) you may have to recognise different moods, attitudes, feelings and registers.

The moods and feelings are:

DISGUST

Eeugh! That fish looks really awful!

ENTHUSIASM

PAIN

Ouch! I've just cut my tongue!

SURPRISE

Good heavens! Did you really win the lottery?

ANNOYANCE,
DISAPPROVAL
or ANGER

Honey, you might have told me about that!

APPREHENSION
or WORRY

Oh, dear! She was such a nice woman. Poor girl...

BOREDOM
or LACK OF
INTEREST

Mm, it's all right, if you like that sort of dress.

IRONY or
SARCASM

Opera music? Oh yes, I really love opera!!!
