ACTIVITY 154:You're going to read a speech from the
Headmaster of a school welcoming a guest speaker who has come along
to give a talk. For questions 1-7, choose whether the statements are
TRUE or FALSE. Then check the
correct answers.
A WELCOME SPEECH
HEADMASTER: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. May I first
say what a pleasure it is to see so many of you here this evening. Since its
inception some one hundred and twenty years ago, this school has produced, 'released'
some would say, sent out into the world thousands of talented young men and
women who went on to achieve great success in their chosen field. A great
many have achieved a certain fame, a few, it is only fair to say, a certain
notoriety. However, I think I can pretty safely say that no Old Boy ... and
of course nowadays we must add 'Old Girl', has, if you like, captured the
imagination of the public in the way that our guest speaker tonight has
done.
For the past twelve months he has had not one,
not two, but three of his plays running to packed audiences in
the West End of London, and you have to go back a long way to
match that particular achievement. And another, I gather, is at
present in rehearsal and is due to open at the 'Prince of Wales'
in four months' time. No-one would now begrudge him a place in
the top echelons of British dramatists. If I may remind you
briefly of some of the reviews his latest success received: 'Wickedly
irreverent; don't miss it!' said The Standard; 'Hilarious!
Sidesplitting!' from The Mail; 'The tears were rolling down my
cheeks!' That was from The Express. And I could go on all
night.
He has of course also found time in the past five years to write
two novels, the first of which, Quantity Before Quality was an
out-and-out best-seller, the sequel to which was the winner of
last year's Thomas Rushton prize. There does indeed seem to be
no limit to his talents.
We remember him here as a fine all-rounder, a hard worker, keen
sportsman, of whom, to my undying shame, when Head of the
English Department, I once wrote: 'tends to be rather
idiosyncratic', and on another occasion – I hope all is forgiven
– 'needs to develop a clearer style'.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are very grateful that such a busy man
has been able and willing to find the time to be with us this
evening. Would you please welcome – or rather, welcome back - Mr
Andrew Barnes...
