Confusing words

 

 

This section of our course will review 100 words groups that are troublesome to many CPE students. Words have been grouped according to the way they are most often confused or misused. Some of these words are homonyms (words that sound alike but are spelled differently) and some are just commonly confused. Each set of confusables (eg: their, there, they're) are displayed together.

Words Groups - Part 8/10

principal = the amount of a debt; the head of a school
principle = a fundamental law

72.

profuse = excessive
profess = to declare

73.

prophecy = prediction
prophesy = to predict

74.

relay = to convey; a race between teams
relate = to tell; to connect

75.

repel = to reject
repeal = to cancel

76.

respectful = showing regard for  
respective = particular

77.

rightly = with good reason  
rightfully = by right
righteously = in an ethical way

78.

ruminating = meditating  
fulminating = shouting, criticizing severely
 
culminating = ending

79.

sail = part of a ship's rigging; to travel by water  
sale = the act of selling

80.

scent = odor  
sent = did send
cent = penny
