Confusing words

 

 

This section of our course will review 100 words groups that are troublesome to many CPE students. Words have been grouped according to the way they are most often confused or misused. Some of these words are homonyms (words that sound alike but are spelled differently) and some are just commonly confused. Each set of confusables (eg: their, there, they're) are displayed together.

Words Groups - Part 7/10

61.

irrelevant = having no bearing on a matter
irreverent = lacking respect

62.

loath = reluctant
loathe = to hate

63.

luxuriant = growing thickly; highly ornamented
luxurious = rich; having an aura of wealth

64.

perpetuate = to cause to continue
perpetrate = to do (something evil)

65.

persecute = to afflict constantly in order to injure
prosecute = to institute legal proceedings against

66.

personal = private
personnel = staff, employees

67.

perspective = viewpoint; appearance determined by distance/position
prospective = likely

68.

precede = to come before
proceed = to continue

69.

prescribe = to order; to advise (as medicine)
proscribe = to outlaw

70.

pray = to beseech
prey = a captured victim
