POSSIBLE ANSWER: The judge enquired where the witness had been on the night of the 13th. (To which) the witness stated/replied/declared that he didn't know and couldn't remember. The judge then enquired whether he had tried to remember. (To which) the witness stated/replied/declared that he had of course but that he had no recollection of that night.
