Confusing words

 

 

This section of our course will review 100 words groups that are troublesome to many CPE students. Words have been grouped according to the way they are most often confused or misused. Some of these words are homonyms (words that sound alike but are spelled differently) and some are just commonly confused. Each set of confusables (eg: their, there, they're) are displayed together.

Words Groups - Part 6/10

51.

horde = a crowd
hoard = to store up a supply

52.

human = belonging to the race of man
humane = kind

53.

immoral = without a sense of morality
immortal = able to live forever

54.

imply = to hint
infer = to conclude from a known fact

55.

in = within
inn = a pub or hostel

56.

incandescent = glowing
clandestine = secret

57.

incite = to urge to action
insight = quality of perceptiveness

58.

incorporate = to include; to merge
incarcerate = to imprison

59.

incredible = unbelievable
incredulous = doubting

60.

ingenious = clever
ingenuous = innocent, naive
