Confusing words

 

 

This section of our course will review 100 words groups that are troublesome to many CPE students. Words have been grouped according to the way they are most often confused or misused. Some of these words are homonyms (words that sound alike but are spelled differently) and some are just commonly confused. Each set of confusables (eg: their, there, they're) are displayed together.

Words Groups - Part 4/10

31.

complement = to make complete
compliment = to praise

32.

continual = happening often
continuous = happening uninterruptedly

33.

conscientious = diligent
conscious = aware; awake

34.

credible = believable
creditable = worthy of credit or praise
credulous = believing anything

35.

depredation = a robbing
deprecation = disapproval

36.

detain = to keep or hold up
retain = to keep in possession; to remember

37.

detracted = took away from
distracted = diverted

38.

devise = to create
revise = to change; to improve

39.

devolve = to deliver from one possessor to another
evolve = to develop

40.

discouraging = seeming to be with no chance of success
disparaging = insulting
