Confusing words

 

 

This section of our course will review 100 words groups that are troublesome to many CPE students. Words have been grouped according to the way they are most often confused or misused. Some of these words are homonyms (words that sound alike but are spelled differently) and some are just commonly confused. Each set of confusables (eg: their, there, they're) are displayed together.

Words Groups - Part 3/10

21.

brake = a retarding device; to retard
break = an opening; a pause; to divide

22.

canvas = a coarse cloth; a painting
canvass = to solicit; to examine

23.

capital = money; punishable by death; most important city; large letter
capitol = the house of legislature

24.

caret = a mark used in proofreading
carat = unit of gem weight
carrot = an orange vegetable

25.

censor = one who screens objectionable material
censure = condemnation

26.

cite = to quote
sight = vision
site = location; webpage

27.

coherent = intelligible
inherent = a naturally included quality

28.

collaborate = to work together
corroborate = to confirm

29.

command = to order
commend = to praise

30.

compile = to collect
comply = to consent
