The structure of CPE :: Part 2/2

We will analyse here the last two CPE sections.

CPE "WRITING" TEST

There are two parts in the CPE "Writing" Test. It makes up 20% of the entire exam and it takes about 90 minutes:

Part 1: WRITE AN ESSAY WITH A DISCURSIVE FOCUS.

Materials may include advertisements, extracts from letters, emails, postcards, diaries, short articles, etc. Using this information, you may have to write an article, a report, a proposal or a letter in 240-280 words.

Part 2: CONTEXTUALISED WRITING TASK.

You choose one of four questions. You have to read some input material which describes a situation, and write one of the following: an article, a competition entry, a contribution to a longer piece, an essay, an information sheet, a letter, a proposal, a report or a review in 280–320 words.

Set Texts: OPTIONAL TASK

Instead of answering Part 2 above, you can choose to write about one of the set texts. Read below about the set text titles for CPE session 2014.

CPE  SET BOOKS: IMPORTANT NOTE.

OM PERSONAL ADVICE: To prepare this test choose a question that you are interested in (you will write better if you know the subject), make a plan before you start writing and decide what information to put in each paragraph.

CPE "SPEAKING" TEST

The CPE "Speaking" Test is worth 20% of the total score for the exam. It has three sections and takes 16 minutes per pair of candidates.

Normally you will do the speaking test with another candidate. The two of you will meet two examiners. One of the examiners will talk to you, the other does not participate in the conversations.

SPEAKING PART 1

Short interview for about TWO minutes.

SPEAKING PART 2

This is a "two-way conversation" in which each candidate usually talks for about TWO minutes.

SPEAKING PART 3

This is an individual "long-turn task". The examiner gives you some specific material (usually photographs) or asks you some specific questions and you have to speak for TEN minutes without interruption.

OM PERSONAL ADVICE: To prepare this test: listen! The more English you listen to, the better you will do. Speak as much as you can with your friends and practise looking at photographs and speaking about them. And finally don't forget to listen carefully to what the examiner has asked you to do!
