Confusing words

 

 

This section of our course will review 100 words groups that are troublesome to many CPE students. Words have been grouped according to the way they are most often confused or misused. Some of these words are homonyms (words that sound alike but are spelled differently) and some are just commonly confused. Each set of confusables (eg: their, there, they're) are displayed together.

Words Groups - Part 2/10

altogether = entirely
all together
= everyone in a group

12.

adapt = to change, to adjust
adept = skilled

13.

allusion = a reference to
illusion = unreal image
delusion = false belief

14.

anyway = in any case
any way = any method

15.

apprised = informed, notified
appraised = estimated the value of

16.

bare = naked; empty; to expose
bear = an animal; to carry; to endure; to produce

17.

berth = a bed; a space for a ship to dock
birth = being born

18.

beside = near
besides = in addition

19.

biannual = occurring twice a year
biennial = occurring once in two years

20.

boarder = resident, one who pays for meals and lodging
border = edge; be adjacent to
