First of all, read and study the following drills mentioned during the conversation. Then, click on PLAY to listen and repeat them aloud.

Before doing Exercise B, please revise these points about the intonation of questions.

If the question begins with a question word (who, what, why, etc.), the voice usually goes DOWN at the end of the question: Why did he come?

If the question can be answered with yes / no, the voice usually goes UP: Do you like it?

Remember there may be variations of the tone to show emotional content:

 

Where do you come from? (DOWN)
Timbuko.
-  What? Where do you come from?
(UP)

 

(showing extreme surprise at this unexpected answer).

 

Question Tags

If the speaker is simply asking for confirmation of what he/she has said, the voice falls (goes DOWN) at the end: It's a nice day, isn't it?

If the speaker is really asking a question the voice rises (goes UP) at the end of the tag: You can come, can't you?
