ABOUT SCHOOL BOOKS
MAN: I remember a book that I was made to read at school and I really hated was The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkein. I could not get into it at all. I mean, I have seen the films, the later films of Lord of the Rings and I think they are brilliantly made and as a kid I would probably have got into those, but reading The Hobbit in class at 12 years old, it just left me completely cold. Was there one that had that effect on you?
WOMAN: Yes, for me it was Northanger Abbey, so boring I cant even remember what it was about, I don't really like Jane Austen at the best of times, but it was just the most boring thing and taught in such a boring way. And we all, we had to read it round the class.
MAN: Yes.
WOMAN: So there was always sort of varying standards of, you know, reading...
MAN: I can imagine...
WOMAN: Just really dull, just irrelevant really.
MAN: It's the kind of thing that works very well as a film but reading it as a kid, just doesn't, does it?
MAN: No, absolutely not.
