Listening and Checking with transcription
 

 

In this last step, listen to the conversation again while you read the transcription. Finally, read the glossary information and notes at the bottom. This step also means good practice for your reading comprehension skills.

Two female colleagues have been invited to lunch by two other colleagues (Janice and Dr. Harris), who are co-authors of a book that has just been published. Yesterday, a day of horrible weather, one of the two female colleagues was apparently unsure as to whether she would be able to be present at the luncheon party. Let's listen to them...
   

COLLEAGUE 1

Thank goodness it turned out to be such a nice day.

COLLEAGUE 2

Yes. It didn't seem too promising yesterday, but you never can tell...

COLLEAGUE 1

I'm so glad you could be with us, too. When Janice called yesterday it seemed so doubtful.

COLLEAGUE 2

I know. I just couldn't tell. But I didn't want to miss it. She said I should call you if...

COLLEAGUE 1

I thought you would. Or if you didn't, I'd stop by and see if you were here.

COLLEAGUE 2

Well, it just seemed like the natural thing to do. I mean, since we're both going there, we might as well go together.

COLLEAGUE 1

I'm looking forward to seeing Dr. Harris again. I haven't seen him for some time.

COLLEAGUE 2

I haven't either. And this seems like such a happy occasion.

COLLEAGUE 1

Yes, I'm glad I was invited. But I'm not sure I've done anything to deserve it.

COLLEAGUE 2

Well, you were there when they started the project. And remember? They said we'd have a celebration luncheon when the book was published.

COLLEAGUE 1

Oh, that's right. Well, anyway, I'll enjoy it.

COLLEAGUE 2

Is it your understanding that they're taking us... I mean, we're to be their guests?

COLLEAGUE 1

Oh, yes. I'm sure of that.

COLLEAGUE 2

Oh, that's good, because otherwise I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to order much of anything. I have only a couple of dollars with me.

COLLEAGUE 1

No problem. I'm sure that's what they wanted to do.

 

GLOSSARY & NOTES

co-author: A writer who collaborates with others in writing something; a joint author.

whether. Introduces two alternatives (If introduces a condition).

luncheon: A midday meal.

not too promising = not very promising (not showing any possibility of clearing up or becoming finer).

you never can tell = One never knows. Here tell means to know or find out by observing. It has the same meaning in I just couldn't tell (three lines below in the conversation).

stop by: come to your home, office, etc. (usually on the way to another destination).

I'm looking forward to seeing him = I hope with anxiety to see him

much of anything = much; much at all.
