Conditional sentences - Part 4

 

 

 

 

REPHRASING SENTENCES

Look at the three examples below. Which of them could you rephrase using IF and/or IT DOESN'T MATTER?

A

Provided you can do that, you should be able to find good things at reasonable prices.

 

B

It's quite quiet as long as it's not market day.

 

C

It's impossible to find a job, however hard I try.

 

IF  PROVIDED / PROVIDING (THAT)  –  AS / SO LONG AS

Examples A and B can be rephrased using IF. PROVIDED / PROVIDING (THAT) and AS / SO LONG AS have a similar meaning to IF. They are followed by similar verb forms and emphasise the condition.

REPHRASING EXAMPLE A:

If you can do that, you should be able to find good things at reasonable prices.

REPHRASING EXAMPLE B:

It's quite quiet if it's not market day.

HOWEVER + ADJ  IT DOESN'T MATTER + HOW + ADJ

Example C could be rephrased using IT DOESN'T MATTER:

REPHRASING EXAMPLE C:

It doesn't matter how hard I try, it's impossible to find a job.

If you want to say that the situation cannot be changed no matter who or what is involved you can use whoever, wherever, however, whatever, or whichever:

Whoever passes the FCE exam, OM Personal will be happy !!

Wherever you go, you will find someone who loves English.

And now look at this example below. What does SUPPOSE mean in this sentence?

Suppose an artist asked to paint your portrait, what would you say?

 

IF  SUPPOSE / SUPPOSING

SUPPOSE and SUPPOSING also have a similar meaning to IF. You use them when you are considering a possible situation and wondering what the results will be.

REPHRASING EXAMPLE D:

If an artist asked to paint your portrait, what would you say?
