DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE THREE WORDS

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

1.

AGENCY, COMPANY and FIRM

COMPANY and FIRM have the same meaning.

An AGENCY is a business which provides a service on behalf of another business.

2.

CREW, TEAM and UNION

A CREW is a group of people who work on a ship or plane, or a group of technicians who work for film or TV.

TEAM is a more general word for a group of people who work together on a particular job.

A UNION is a workers' organisation which looks after their rights and conditions of work.

3.

DISMISS, SACK and LAY OFF

When employers DISMISS workers, they take away their job and stop them doing it, often because they are not doing the work well.

SACK is a more informal way of saying the same thing.

LAY OFF means to dismiss workers specifically because there is no more work available, or because the employer can no longer afford to pay them.

 

4.

FEE, WAGES and SALARY

A FEE is the amount of money paid for a particular job or service.

WAGES is money paid weekly for manual or unskilled work.

SALARY is money paid monthly for professional work.

5.

LEAVE, BREAK and TIME OFF

LEAVE is a formal period of time off work, e.g. for extended sickness or to have a baby.

A BREAK is a short period of rest during work.

TIME OFF is a period when you do not have to work, because of a short illness or a holiday ('vacation' in American English).

6.

TAKE ON, APPOINT and HIRE

APPOINT means to ask someone formally to do a job.

TAKE ON is a more informal way of saying the same thing.

HIRE is to pay someone to do a particular job only.

7.

TIP, BONUS and COMMISSION

TIP, BONUS and COMMISSION are all types of money you receive for work.

A TIP can be given for other good services (e.g. to a hotel porter, a hairdresser, a tour guide, a driver, etc.).
