When people want to emphasise a word in a sentence,
they say that word
more loudly and also use a higher pitch, that is, they
move their voice up. You will hear five statements, each of which is a
response to a question. In each response a word or phrase -highlighted

Ann tells Tom that the wedding is Saturday next week. Then Tom asks
her where the service is.
ANN: It's at St
George's church.
TOM: Is the service at St Michael's church?
ANN: It's at St George's church.
Now, Tom wants to know where the party is afterwards
ANN: It's at
Sophie's house.
TOM: Where's the party afterwards?
ANN: It's at Sophie's house.
Now, Tom wants to know when Ann is going to the dressmaker's.
ANN: I've
been to the dressmaker's.
TOM: When are you going to the dressmaker's?
ANN: I've been to the
dressmaker's.
Now, Tom asks Ann if Rachel has bought a hat for the wedding.
ANN: No. she's
borrowed a hat.
TOM: Has Rachel bought a hat for the wedding?
ANN: No, she's borrowed a
hat.
Now, Tom wants to know if the bridegroom has black hair.
ANN: No, he has
brown hair.
TOM: Does the bridegroom have black hair?
ANN: No, he has brown
hair.
