Around the city of Vienna are a few hundred of Heurigen or wine |

taverns. Many are on the edge of the Vienna Woods at Grinzing. |

Avoid these unless you do not mind in spending the evening with |
2 |
coachloads of another tourists and sad-looking musicians with |
3 |
accordions. Viennese people would rather to go to taverns which are |
4 |
further away but at which you can rely on getting refreshing wine |
5 |
and one simple but delicious food. My favourite is Sirbu, set in |
6 |
the vineyard-covered hills of Vienna's nineteenth district. It is |
7 |
best to go on a summer evening in slightly fine weather when you |
8 |
can sit outside at her plain wooden tables underneath trailing |
9 |
vines. A busy waitress in traditional costume will bring young |
10 |
white wine served in jugs or by the glass, which tastes of best |
11 |
mixed with sparkling mineral water. A range of simple dishes can be |
12 |
picked yourself up at the counter inside: slices of roast pork, |
13 |
roast chicken, cold vegetable salads, fresh radishes, tomatoes, and a |
14 |
dark bread which can be eaten with cheese spiced with a garlic, |
15 |
onion and paprika. I would like to finish off my meal with a piece of |
apple
strudel. |
