INTERVIEWER:
Barry, you have played football for Liverpool and for England,
and you've also played for a Spanish team. Why
?
BARRY:
Well, a Spanish club bought me
from Liverpool. Also my wife thought it
would be nice to spend a few years in a warm country!!
INTERVIEWER:
Could
?
BARRY:
No, not a word!! But I started having Spanish
lessons as soon as I arrived.
INTERVIEWER:
Who
?
BARRY:
The sister of one of my team-mates. She was a
very good teacher.
INTERVIEWER:
I wonder if
?
BARRY:
My wife was a better one! But she had more
time for studying than I did.
INTERVIEWER:
But you spoke quite fluently after
a few
months,
?
BARRY:
Not exactly fluently, no!! But I could make myself
understood, both on and off the football field. It was
great to be able to really communicate with Spanish
people.
INTERVIEWER:
But now you've left Spain. Can you tell
me where
?
BARRY:
Japan. I ve got a contract with a Japanese club.
INTERVIEWER:
So you've
got to pack your suitcases
again. What
?
BARRY:
Top of the list, after my football gear of course, is
a Japanese dictionary and a Japanese grammar book. I
want to learn the language as soon as possible!!
