OPINANDO Y ACONSEJANDO CON VERBOS MODALES EN
PASADO.
Esta gramática practica los verbos modales en pasado para
expresar opiniones (opinions) y aconsejar (advice).
Tres son las alternativas a analizar:
1.
GIVING AN OPINION
►
about actions
Your wife's boss
shouldn't have stayed so late. El jefe de tu esposa no debería
haberse quedado hasta tan tarde.
El orador está dando una opinión
sobre la acción de la persona; considera
que su estadía fue demasiado extensa.
2.
GIVING AN OPINION
►
about people
Your wife's boss
could have been more considerate. El jefe de tu esposa podría
haber sido más considerado.
El orador está dando una opinión
sobre la persona; considera que no fue lo
suficientemente educado.
3.
GIVING ADVICE
I would have asked your
wife's boss to leave. Yo le habría pedido al jefe de
tu esposa que se retirara.
El orador está imaginando que esta
(hipotética) situación le está sucediendo a él y aconseja: If this
had happened to me, I would have asked him to leave. (Si esto me hubiese
sucedido a mí, le habría pedido que se retirara).

PAST MODALS:
OPINIONS AND ADVICE
IMPORTANT:
When pronouncing past modals,
HAVE is reduced to
/əv/.
Therefore, the reduced HAVE
sounds like preposition OF.
This allows you to gain speed in
the sentence.
IMPORTANTE: Al
pronunciar los modales en
pasado,
HAVE se reduce a
/əv/.
Por lo tanto, la forma reducida de
HAVE se parece a la
pronunciación de OF. Esto
permite ganar velocidad en la
oración.
He
should have left earlier.
Debería haberse retirado más temprano.
He
shouldn't have stayed so
late.
No deberia haberse quedado tan tarde.
I
would have asked him to
leave.
Yo le habría pedido que se retirara.
I
wouldn't have stayed so
late.
Yo no me habría quedado hasta tan tarde.
He
could have been more
considerate.
Podría haber sido más considerado.
You
could have reminded him
of the time.
Podrías haberle recordado la hora.

Basándote en la gramática anterior lee estas tres situaciones y completa
los comentarios o sugerencias seleccionando de cada menú los modales
en pasado más adecuados.

friend borrowed his car and dented it.
When he returned it, he didn't say
anything to Mariano about it. What would

friends. Two of the people they invited

Marcos and
Lucia had planned to get married. At a
party, their friends gave them a lot of
gifts. Later, Marcos and Lucia broke off
their engagement; however they kept the
gifts. Do you think they should have
kept them? What would you have advised
them to do?
No, I
don't think Marcos and Lucia
kept the gifts. I
advised them to send back
each gift with an appropriate note.
